This thought at the time of the Americanization movement did not fuel racism, but rather integrated immigrants into American culture establishing a broader melting pot including all of the new customs and traditions brought along by each new immigrant. Beginning with the Americanization movement in 1900 citizens were introduced to English, as stated above, to be able to pick their lives up. By breaking down the walls of language barriers, Official English would not only bring American’s closer together as a people, but also demolish negative connotations towards immigrants.Īlthough the national English movement began in the early 1900s it has gone through radical changes in the last hundred years. Looking deeper into the pros and cons of the issue many of the arguments against the establishment of a national language would not be affected, taking nothing away from immigrants, but rather opening the doors to a brighter future. ![]() Respectively researching both sides of the issue, English as a national language is often taken out of context. Showing America was established on English and the question of language was not an issue, but rather a non-spoken agreement. According to Friederike Baer, “The question of language was not debated at all during the Constitutional Convention, and the new constitution made no mention of the issue” (61). Original historical documents are all written in English, with the majority of the people of the United States speaking English. America was not set up with an official language but the government was established in English. Understanding that wanting to improve ones lifestyle by moving to the land of the free did not come free, but rather brought on the need for English. At the time this was not described, as racism, but rather a solution to ones own life problems. Learning English was one of the sure fire ways of becoming a true American. Learning quickly that the segregation and racism they endured could be quickly demolished by one key factor, English. Looking back into the establishment of America as a country, immigrants dreamed of the America where the streets where covered with gold, often coming to find out that dream was not much different than the corruption and poverty of their native lands. Understanding this feeling of connection that a language can bind a people together with I believe making English the national language would not only promote nationalism and a feeling of pride for America, but bring the people of the United States together. ![]() It made me feel like a real German to not only be able to communicate with this German government worker, but for her to tell me my German was good enough to be able to stay in Germany was to this day, the most exciting moment of my life. It was the first day in Germany and already I felt such a strong connection to the Fatherland. The feelings that rushed over me as I recognized and answered the questions in my not perfect, but passable German gave me a strong sense of German patriotism. Having taken German all of high school I was excited and nervous to put my knowledge to the real test. To obtain a working visa in Germany one must pass both a written and oral exam. Once arriving in Germany I was immediately brought to the German consulate to receive my work visa. ![]() Preservation of America: English as the Official Languageīorn an American with a love for foreign language I set my sights on Germany and left my life in the United States behind me. These key elements are now rearranged in a way that I hope makes my paper flow nicely and providing little turbulence for the reader. I took a lot of the input from the reverse outline and rearranged the major body of the paragraph while adding and subtracting many of the key elements. My rough draft was redone about 3-4 times. The rough draft requires more work than the final draft because it is time consuming and requires one to write like its a final draft with hope that the final paper or destination will therefor be easy and enjoyable rather than just as time consuming and stressful as the rough draft. The rough draft for the Research Paper is like the flight to a final destination because it is the longest most extensive single piece compiled of all the work it took to get their.
